Aspen was delighted to attend the Property Insurance and Restoration Conference (PIRC), which encourages audience participation with topic-led discussions from all segments of the property restoration industry. PIRC is very different from other conferences, in that attendees have their voices heard on topics vital to the industry and discuss problems and solutions with other industry professionals. Topics included restorer requirements, role descriptions, data-estimating standards, background checks, new technologies, and legislative issues confronting the industry.

Who Was It For?

PIRC represents all segments of the industry, usually with national figures or those who represent their own company attending. Restoration companies of all sizes are represented, as well as the insurance industry, IP, vendors and other key players. The objective is to bring all sides together to discuss issues.

Schedule

The event ran over two half days, from Tuesday afternoon through to Wednesday lunchtime. Topics covered included relevant legislation and regulation, lessons learned from Hurricanes Florence and Michael, background checks, and vetting photo documentation best practice.

The recently established PIRC-CIECA Data Standards & Accessibility Committee reported on the work they have been doing acknowledging the need for data exchange and accessibility standards, and developing the ways in which this can be achieved. The committee is a collaborative initiative between PIRC and CIECA, a data standards organization that designs industry electronic standards, codes and standard messages and delivers implementation guides to improve industry efficiency. Members develop all standards.

The meeting discussed background check standardization, best practices for photo documentation, defining roles of restorers, consultants and insurers to the claims process, and it also accommodated discussions focused on improving the overall industry.

A special presentation focused on background checks and the potential for adopting a standard that could be integrated across the industry, cutting costs and inefficiencies. Those who had pre-registered for the conference or were included on the communications list received a draft white paper in advance.
